Copyright and Creative Commons
Why do we need to reference?
Copying words straight from a book or a website is called plagiarism. Plagiarism is wrong because you are taking credit for someone elses work. To avoid plagiarism you need to read the information, then put it into your own words. You will still need to reference where the information came from as they were not your original ideas.
Copyright
Many images, music and videos you might find on the internet have a copyright on them. This is a legal term that means the item belongs to the individual who created it. It is therefore illegal to copy or use the item. 'All rights reserved' means that the work is copyrighted and needs permission from the owner to use. |
Creative Commons
Creative Commons music, videos and images have 'Some Rights Reserved'. This means you can use the item, however, you need to reference where you took the image from. You will need to make sure you take note of the web address, when you copy the image, music or video. You can then link the address to the item and put the address in your bibliography list. |
